George and Lawrence Johnson, two brothers who wanted to take advantage of the postwar industrial boom, founded Johnson Level & Tool in 1947. They started Johnson Level & Tool with the humble ambition of owning and managing their own custom wood and metalworking store. But, the quality of their craftsmanship quickly drew more attention than they had anticipated. Eventually, a representative from Skil Craft ordered a small toy level, which the brothers made. It was an immediate success.
Today, Johnson Level & Tool markets its products in over 30 countries and has hundreds of high-quality products to offer, appealing to contractors as well as do-it-yourselfers.
Fun Fact: Johnson Level & Tool remains family owned and operated. George and Lawrence were succeeded by George’s two sons, William and Robert.
