PORTER-CABLE
In 2006, Porter-Cable celebrated its 100th anniversary. The century old company has carried on a tradition of manufacturing some of the best power tools on the market. Three men, Porter, Porter, and Cable started simply by building several different tools. But in 1914, the men started to focus and began producing power tools.
During the great depression, Porter-Cable continued its growth by buying struggling tool companies, including what would turn out to be a very influential sanding company.
In 1926, Porter-Cable became a serious player in the power tool industry with the introduction of the "Take-About Sander" - the first portable belt sander. For the first time in history a craftsman could take his sander to the work, and not the other way around. This became Porter-Cable's specialty: portable power tools.
Since then, the company has expanded and changed hands, and is now owned by Black & Decker.
Fun Fact: The Smithsonian Institute has created a special exhibit surrounding the history of Porter-Cable tools. One piece in the collection is the name tag of James Cockrell who had perfect attendance during his 29 year career with Porter-Cable.
