POWERMATIC
Leonard F. Smith, Sr. started Powermatic out of necessity. Originally in the lumber business, he sold timber and rough-cut lumber to others. Smith believed, correctly, that he could make more money and a better quality product if he planed the wood himself before selling it.
Instead of buying a planer, Smith built one himself - the seeds of Powermatic. He eventually sold the planer and, with the money he made from selling, he built four more. After quickly selling the additional planers, he saw the writing on the wall and eventually shifted the focus of his business to manufacturing and selling his own line of woodworking equipment. From this humble and accidental beginning, Powermatic emerged.
Powermatic consistently grew and was purchased by several different enterprises until their most recent acquisition by WMH - owner of JET tools and Performax Products. Besides Powermatic planers, Powermatic is best known for their jointers, lathes, large sanders, table saws, and band saws.
Fun Fact: Powermatic is so concerned about quality that in 1958 they added their own foundry onto their factory to better control the grade of steel that they were working with.
