Like Black & Decker, Stanley Works is a powerhouse in the industry, owning several subsidiary companies around the globe. In 1843, Frederick Trent Stanley started what would become Stanley Works. More than 50 years later, Stanley's Bolt Manufactory (their spelling, not ours) merged with his cousin's business, Stanley Rule and Level Company, creating what is known today as Stanley Works.
This globally recognized tool and hardware manufacturing company sells tools in more than 130 countries. Stanley Works products are found on almost every worksite - and nearly everyone has used a Stanley tape measure. In November, 2009, Stanley Works agreed to acquire fellow power house Black & Decker in deal valued at $4.5 Billion dollars.
Fun Fact: Over a century after Frederick founded his original foundry, Stanley Works has grown to penetrate markets from hardware, locks, and hand tools, to security electronics and industrial storage solutions. Some of their subsidiary companies include: Best Access Systems, Bostitch, Craftsman Hand Tools (until the mid-1980s), EVS, Facom, Frisco Bay Industries Ltd., Fristco-ATMS, HSM, Integrator, Intivid Solutions, Mac Tools, National, Proto, Safemasters, Sargent & Greenleaf, Inc., Stanley Supply and Services, Stanley Tools, and Vidmar.
