An air compressor increases the amount of air within a specific space by literally packing in the air, or compressing it. This, in turn, increases the air pressure, creating a force that can then be used for a wide range of purposes.
The power source for this process can be provided by a diesel or petrol engine, an electric motor or batteries. 12v compressors are still incredibly powerful and can be used when you need to quickly inflate items such as tyres. You can see a 12V air compressor in use at your local service station or a smaller portable unit for cleaning in a machine shop.
Types of Air Compressors
Compressors have been in use for over 100 years because air is a clean, safe, convenient and flexible resource. The early models were not quite as impressive as the Puma range, but workers saw uses for them instantly.
The most commonly used types today are:
• Reciprocation or Piston Compressors -These are big machines that use pistons, driven by a crankshaft to produce the compressed air.
• Screw Air Compressors - This type is often used in larger industrial jobs, or to operate heavy machinery and equipment such as jackhammers.
• Rotary Sliding Vane Compressors - This action is often thought to be easier to service and these also last longer.
• Centrifugal Air Compressors - These run efficiently on electricity to produce large quantities of clean, pressurised air.
Each type, from heavy duty three phase to a 12V portable compressor, will have its own unique set of advantages and disadvantages. The one you choose to buy will depend upon the type of application for which you plan to use it. For example, silent air compressors have the obvious benefit of being quiet, but will not have the same power as an industrial units.
